CONSTRUCTION

A jacket in a combination of double moss stitch and structured intarsia. The collar and edges are worked in double knitting.
The jacket is worked top-down. First, stitches are cast on at the back of the neck and worked back and forth in stripes with increases for the shoulders. When the shoulders have reached their final width, double moss stitch is worked on the back until the armhole depth is reached. At the same time, a small triangle pattern in intarsia is formed in the center of the back.
The back piece rests while stitches are picked up for the front pieces along each of the shoulders, and the triangle pattern is worked according to the chart to the bottom of the armholes. The front pieces are joined with the back piece and the rest of the body is worked according to chart.
Double knitting is worked all around the edges and collar.
The sleeves are worked one at a time. Stitches are knitted up along the armholes and the sleeve cap is shaped using short rows. Intarsia is worked in stripes according to the chart, while decreases are made along the inside of the sleeves.
When the sleeves have reached the desired length, they are finished with a double-knitted edge.

ABOUT THE DESIGNER'S INSPIRATION AND DESIGN PROCESS

Lene Rix (Odd Row) writes about the design:

Alice Jacket is my contribution to Isager Archives 2 – a relaxed jacket inspired by the triangular lines and texture in the original sketch for Marianne Isager’s Skæl from the 1980s.
The design draws on Alice in Wonderland, with a colour palette of beige, black, and antique rose reminiscent of the playing cards from Sir John Tenniel’s original illustrations. Triangular shapes are created through textured intarsia colourwork, while black lines are highlighted with purl texture to define the geometric patterns. Intarsia was a technique widely used in the 80s and is traditionally worked back and forth – perfect for an open front. For the sleeves, I developed a technique for working intarsia to mimic knitting in the round, eliminating the need for grafting or sewing. The jacket is knitted in Isager Jensen Yarn held together with a strand of Silk Mohair. All edges and the high collar are finished in double knitting, creating a calm frame that balances the varied textures and patterns. Alice Jacket is fastened with handmade ceramic buttons.

ABOUT ISAGER ARCHIVES 2 - COLLECTION

This collection is inspired by Marianne Isagers many designs from the 80s and 90s. 15 of Denmark’s most talented knitwear designers have spent a weekend with us in Tversted, with access to Marianne’s substantial collection of patterns. The designers have used one or more patterns as inspiration for their respective contributions to the Isager Archives 2 collection.
