Repeat Row 1 – 4, while working BUTTONHOLES the same way as on the swatch. On the first buttonhole row M1 increases are worked AT THE SAME TIME between each cable on the back (the same way as on the swatch), so there are now 5 sts in each garter stripe between the cables on both the fronts and the back. There are now a total of 219 (247) 275 (303) sts on the needle

SWATCH
With both strands held together, cast on 22 stitches and work the first row from the WS as follows:
Row 1 (WS): Work the edge stitch by slipping the first stitch purlwise through back loop from the left needle to the right needle, wyif slip 1 purlwise, K5, P2, K4, P2, K5, wyif slip 1 purlwise, K1.
Row 2 (RS): Work edge stitch, knit to end of row.
Row 3 (WS): Work as Row 1.
Row 4: (RS): Work as Row 2 but work 2×2 cable in the two locations of stockinette stitches.
The 2×2 cable can be done using a cable needle or it can be done without a cable needle as follows: knit into the second stitch, then knit into the first stitch and then slip the stitches off the left needle.
Work these 4 rows twice.

Then introduce a buttonhole into the established pattern as follows:
Work Row 1.
Work RS buttonhole row: Work edge stitch, K4, YO, K2tog, knit to end of row.
Work WS buttonhole row: Work edge stitch, wyif slip 1 purlwise, K5, P2, K4, P2, K5, wyif slip 1 purlwise, K1.
Work Row 4.
Next row (WS): Sl2 wyif, k3, yarn over, k1, p2, k5, p2, k5, sl1 wyif, k1.
The buttonhole is placed close to the cable and will fit perfectly with a button that is sewn onto the middle of the garter edge on the opposite front. Always take care not to place the buttonholes in the middle of an edge, as it is the side of the buttonhole closest to the edge that the button will lean against.
Now continue in pattern as before, but remember that there are now also 5 sts in the middle stripe and a total of 23 sts on the needle.
When Row 1 – 4 have been worked 6 times, work Row 1 again and then work a row with a buttonhole the same way as before – there are 9 garter ridges between each buttonhole.
When Row 1 – 4 have been worked 9 times, work Row 1 again and then bind off from the RS.
Measure the swatch, which should now measure 9 x 10 cm [4 x 4 inches]. If the swatch is too small, larger needles are needed to achieve the correct gauge. If the swatch is too large, smaller needles are needed to achieve the correct gauge.

Work a total of 12 (19) 19 (26) decrease rows, then continue straight in pattern across the remaining 81 (81) 95 (95) sts (11 (11) 13 (13) x 7 sts + 4 sts) in pattern, with a cable + a garter stitch (which is used for seaming together the jacket) at each edge. Continue until the armholes measure 20 (21) 22 (23) cm [7 3/4 (8 1/4) 8 3/4 (9) inches], then mark the center 23 (23) 25 (25) sts for the back of the neck and work short rows to shape the shoulders. There are 29 (29) 35 (35) sts on each shoulder.

SLEEVES
Cast on 48 (48) 56 (56) sts (4 x 11 (11) 13 (13) sts + 4 sts) with one strand of each yarn held together.
(…)
Size L: Work M1 increases so there are 5 sts between the cables, but omit the increase in the last garter stripe at each edge, so there are still only 4 sts in these 2 stripes.
